When my parents came back from the States they showed me a pleasant surprise: LA Noire for the PS3 with two add on cases.
I've been playing it now for easily over an hour, completing six of the cases already.
Overall Rating: 9/10
It is rare for me to give games a high score whenever I review something, the only other games that earned this was Grand Theft Auto 4, Dead Space, Heavy Rain and Assassin's Creed 2. However LA Noire offers a new kind of gameplay relying more on the player's perception rather than skill, although they can go hand in hand.
Rockstar knew what they were doing with this game and it shows.
When in a gun fight the gameplay is a lot like their GTA series, duck behind cover and fire, or go in guns blazing (although sometimes that isn't wise).
My favorite part of the game has to be the interogation scenes, where I need to rely on subtle hints the characters give off to tell if they're telling the Truth, whether they're Doubtful or flat out Lying. It can be from facial expressions (Rockstar wasn't kidding when they said the faces were realistic, if it wasn't for the controller in my hand and HUD I'd think I was watching a movie) to body movement.
Driving is a lot like in GTA except there's no handbrake to do sharp turns and it seems the streets are a lot more crowded. It's better to drive at the speed limit than to race down the roads in this game, unlike GTA.
The only thing that bugs me is sometimes the game lags while playing, and only during the middle of a case. It's something anyone can look over but it's a pain in the ass when you expect a smooth gameplay from a top company like Rockstar.
All in all I highly suggest everyone gets LA Noire. It's a fun game that challenges your mind in a different way than other games can and I'm excited to see where the story takes me.
On a side note, I can sort of see they got the inspiration for this game from Heavy Rain during Norman's scenes, the FBI agent who wants to catch the murderer of the game, because he would also investigate a murder scene, find clues and use them to make his conclusion about the case.
If anything, Rockstar one-upped Heavy Rain's investigative scenes with LA Noire by taking them to another level and turning it into a full-fledged game.
